# Environment

***

Environment maps are images that wrap around your entire 3D world. A 2:1 ratio equirectangular image that is formatted to wrap seamlessly works best. Once you choose an environment in the Element UI, you will be able to click “show in BG” to have the environment show in the background of your composition. You can also load a [Custom Environment](https://www.videocopilot.net/help/element/help_files_v2/compositing_element_3d/custom_environment_maps/) map into your scene.

**Override Layer**\
If you wanted to use a layer as the Environment map, you can choose a layer in your project from the Override Layer drop down to activate it. Another way to do this would be to use the [Custom Texture Maps](https://www.videocopilot.net/help/element/help_files_v2/texturing_and_materials/animated_video_textures/) slots.
